Proof That I Do Stuff

V&A Museum

As an ID geek, you’re kind of obsessed with chairs. You’re obsessed with the designers that created chairs. You’re obsessed with looking at them, finding them, and dream of sitting in them. It’s kind of weird actually. As I write this post, I am trying to step back from my love of this timeless object to help explain to those who don’t share my affinity for then; help to explain why it is that chairs are just so incredibly cool…. And I’m having a hard time with it.

On this visit to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England, I was, in one instance of many, put into the same room as works I had only seen in photos and powerpoints. The Eames LCD, the Paulistano Chair, the Wassily Chair, the Louis Ghost Chair, the Barcelona Chair, the Tulip Chair, the Diamond Chair, the Panton Chair. I could go on but I shouldn’t. Although the V&A had many stunning exhibits, I’d have been fine having seen just this room.

Next time you meet a designer that lives under the umbrella of Architecture, Interior Design, or Industrial Design, ask them what their favorite chair is. I can just about promise that they’ll have an answer.
